You have seen bears in documentaries. You have scrolled past photos online. But you have never sat in silence inside a pine forest at dusk, watching a wild brown bear emerge from the treeline just metres away.

That is what bear watching in Finland actually feels like. And it is closer within reach than you might think.

What a real wilderness bear watching night looks like

Your evening begins at 4 pm with a short drive into the Kainuu forest. From there, you walk roughly one kilometre along a quiet forest trail to reach the hide. The trees grow tall around you. The air smells of pine resin. By the time you settle into your seat, the outside world has already fallen away.

As dusk arrives, the bears come.

From the hide you watch bears move, feed, and interact in their natural habitat, completely undisturbed by your presence. In the summer months from June through August, this is one of the most reliable places in all of Finland to spot bear cubs. The tall pines surrounding the hide are a favourite climbing spot for young bears, and sightings of multiple bears in a single night are common.

You stay the whole night. In the early morning, after 7 am, you walk back out and return to Martinselkosen Eräkeskus. The experience does not end at sunset. It lasts until sunrise.

Safety and comfort inside the professional hide

Sitting metres from wild brown bears sounds intense. It is. But it is also completely safe inside our professionally built hides.

We operate two large hides in the forest, one accommodating up to 12 people and the other up to 9. Both are built for a full overnight stay. Here is what you get inside:

Movement inside the hide is possible, but we ask guests to stay quiet so the bears remain relaxed and close. Your guide will help you navigate this naturally throughout the night.

The hides have been in the same location for several years. The bears know this area. That familiarity is part of why sightings here are so consistent.

Why Kainuu is Finland’s prime bear country

Finland holds one of the highest densities of wild brown bears in Europe, and Kainuu sits at the heart of that population. The region’s vast, unbroken forests provide exactly what bears need: space, food, and minimal human disturbance.

Our hides are positioned in the main feeding area for bears in Martinselkonen. This is not a location chosen for convenience. It is chosen because the bears are already there.

The forest around the hides also attracts other remarkable wildlife. Guests frequently spot White-tailed Eagles soaring above the treeline. With good fortune, you may also encounter a Black Kite or even a Wolverine during your night in the hide.

Kainuu is not a managed wildlife reserve or a curated viewing park. It is real, working wilderness. That is precisely what makes bear watching in Finland here so different from anything else you can book.

What makes this experience different from a zoo or safari

At a zoo, the animal comes to you because it has no choice. On a standard safari, you follow animals from a vehicle at a distance. Neither of those is what happens here.

The bears at Martinselkonen are entirely wild. They come to this forest because it is their territory and their feeding ground. You are simply a quiet, invisible observer inside a hide they have long since stopped noticing.

Our large bear hides are open from the end of April through mid-August. The summer window from June to August offers the best chance of seeing bear cubs alongside adult bears.
