A bear watching tour in the Finnish forest is something different. Here, you watch wild bears move freely through their natural habitat, just metres away, while you sit safely hidden in the trees.

From our purpose-built hides, guests regularly see several bears in a single night. Depending on the season, you may also spot:
- Bear cubs climbing the tall pine trees surrounding the hide
- White-tailed Eagles soaring overhead
- Black Kites and, with real luck, Wolverines
This is a genuine wildlife experience in Finland, not a guaranteed sighting on a set schedule. That unpredictability is exactly what makes it unforgettable.
How the purpose-built hides keep guests safe
Safe bear watching is not about keeping bears far away. It is about being close without the bears knowing you are there.
Our large hides are built directly inside the main feeding area the bears use in Martinselkonen. The bears come to you. You stay still, stay quiet, and watch from a few metres away through your personal viewing opening.
Every practical detail is taken care of inside the hide:
- Individual seating and a dedicated viewing and photography opening for each guest
- Bunk beds and sleeping bags for the overnight stay
- A composting toilet inside the hide
- A professional guide with you throughout the entire night
- A light evening snack served during the excursion
There is a small amount of space to move around inside, but quiet movement is essential. Bears have sharp senses, and keeping still is what keeps them close.
We have two large hides at this location. One accommodates up to 12 guests and the other up to 9. Both offer the same level of comfort and the same outstanding view.
What makes Kainuu the right place for bear watching
Finland’s bear population is concentrated in the east and north of the country, and Kainuu sits right at the heart of it. The wilderness here is expansive, undisturbed, and exactly the kind of habitat bears thrive in.
Our large hides have been in the same location for several years. The bears know this ground. They return to it consistently, which is why these hides offer some of the most reliable bear watching in Finland.
The surrounding pine forest also gives bear cubs the tall trees they need to climb and play. Between June and August, this is normally the best place we know of to see small bear cubs up close. Watching a cub scramble up a pine trunk ten metres from your viewing opening is the kind of moment that stays with you.
Kainuu bears are wild, and wild animals do not follow a script. But the combination of a proven feeding area, an established hide location, and peak season timing gives you the best realistic conditions for a meaningful encounter.
Every detail handled — from arrival to morning light
You do not need any specialist gear, wilderness experience, or prior knowledge of bear behaviour. We handle the logistics so you can focus entirely on what you came to see.
Here is how the bear watching night runs:
- Arrive at 4 pm at Martinselkonen Wilds Centre for a short drive to the trailhead
- Walk approximately 1 km along a forest trail to reach the hide
- Settle in with your personal viewing spot, evening snack, and guide beside you
- Watch through the night as bears move freely in front of the hide
- Return to the centre after 7 am the following morning
The hides are in use from the end of April through to mid-August. The summer months, particularly June through August, offer the best chance of seeing bear cubs alongside adult bears.
Bring a camera. The individual viewing openings are designed for bear watching and wildlife photography, and the light in a Finnish summer night is unlike anything you will find elsewhere.
