From there, a 1 km walk along a forest trail brings you to the hide itself, tucked quietly into a pine forest that serves as one of the main bear feeding areas in the region.
This isn’t a quick evening outing. You stay the entire night.
We have two large bear hides available, one accommodating 12 people and the other 9. Inside each hide, every guest has their own seat and a dedicated viewing and photography opening. When darkness settles and the forest comes alive, you’re already in position.
Here’s what the overnight experience includes:
- A guided walk to the hide through genuine Finnish wilderness
- Your own seat with a personal viewing and camera opening
- Bunk beds and sleeping bags for the overnight stay
- A light evening snack served during the safari
- A composting toilet inside the hide
- A knowledgeable guide with you throughout the entire night
- Return to Martinselkosen Wilds Centre the following morning after 7 am
The hides are open from the end of April through to mid-August, covering the full season when bears are most active and visible.

The answer is yes, and here’s why it works: the hide structure keeps you concealed and at a respectful distance from the bears, so they behave naturally without being disturbed. You observe, and they live their lives. That balance is what makes the experience feel genuinely wild rather than staged.
Your guide stays with you inside the hide for the entire night. They know the behaviour of the bears in this specific area, they know what to watch for, and they keep the group calm and quiet so the animals stay close and undisturbed.

Our large hides sit within the main bear feeding area of Martinselkonen, a location that has been used for bear watching for several years. That consistency matters. The bears know the area. Sightings here are not a matter of chance in the way they might be elsewhere.
What you can realistically expect to see from our Kainuu bear watching hides:
- Multiple bears in a single night, often including more than one adult
- Bear cubs from June through August, when mothers bring their young to feed. The tall pines surrounding the hides are a favourite climbing spot for cubs
- White-tailed eagle, frequently spotted from the hide
- With good fortune, black kite and wolverine have also been observed
The large hides are consistently the best location we offer for seeing bear cubs. If watching a mother with cubs is on your list, June to August is the window to aim for.
